Most major cities in the UK have their own pub crawl routes. Leeds has the Otley Run, Cambridge has its King Street Run and London has its Monopoly Pub Crawl, based on locations on a Monopoly board. Newcastle has a couple of designated routes itself, but you don’t have to follow them!

The beauty of a pub crawl is that you can set your own route, go in whichever bar you want and not have to worry about getting lost until closing time. However, picking the right pub to end your crawl in is tricky, which is why we’ve picked out five bars in Newcastle that are perfect for seeing out a marathon session with your mates in.

Idols/Vaults

Formerly known as The City Vaults, this sports bar and nightclub has plenty of room for you to see out a great night around Newcastle. An extensive drinks menu and live sport on the various big screens mean that you won’t get too bored.

It’s also on the Bigg Market, which is close by to many taxi ranks. On top of that, there’s different music played across two floors, so if you don’t like the tunes upstairs, just head downstairs!

City Tavern

A relaxed, classy pub that has been going for nearly a century, City Tavern is a haven for those who like a real ale or two. Having only recently been refurbished, it has a charming, retro feel, with plenty of seating across two floors to accommodate you and your friends.

Real ale is the star of the show on its drinks menu, but cocktails, spirits and wines are also available. Watch out for drinkers’ dogs though – City Tavern prides itself on being a dog-friendly pub!

The Charles Grey

Conveniently located opposite the Monument Metro Station, The Charles Grey is a welcoming, friendly sort of bar where you can have a last couple of pints at a leisurely pace. It also has a long cocktail menu to boot, where you can get a refreshing mojito to keep you from drifting off.

When you’re in the mood for something different, they also have a lengthy list of wines to choose from. Their offer of getting the rest of a bottle free when you order two large glasses of red, white or rose is worth a pop.

Old George Inn

One of Newcastle’s oldest pubs, the Old George Inn is in a relatively quiet part of the city centre. It may not be the cheapest bar in town, but it’s a good place to finish off a crawl, with plenty of comfortable places to sit down and have one last cocktail.

Whether it’s a White Russian or one of their ‘seven deadly gins’, you won’t forget the last drink of the night. While you’re there, it’s worth looking around the walls of this 17th century bar to take in what it might have been like back when it first opened.

Fitzgeralds

Finally, where better to end a pub crawl than in a CAMRA award-winning one? Named Pub of the Year for 2016, Fitzgeralds manages to pull off the trick of being both contemporary and traditional, with craft ales and wines from all over the world and closer to home resulting in a packed menu.

Be warned that Fitzgeralds closes its doors at midnight. That shouldn’t matter too much if you’ve made an early start though, while its proximity to the Quayside area means you can get some fresh air come closing time.
