We explore the best festive markets around the UK which are a short walk (or a quick tube ride with regards to London) from our aparthotels in the city.

There are two types of people in this world. Those who start to celebrate Christmas immediately after the trick-or-treaters have taken the last mini packet of Haribo and those who don’t want to see or hear from Kevin the Carrot until door one on their advent calendar has swung open on its cardboard hinges.

Whether you fully embrace the festivities for the entire lead-up or need a kick start to help get you into the Christmas Spirit, a Christmas market is the perfect place to visit. So, inhale the aroma of mulled wine and German bratwurst, accept that the cotton wool stuck to the stall roofs are the closest you are going to get to show this Winter and enjoy what some of the best Christmas markets in the UK have to offer. All of which are free, in full swing and close to a Roomzzz aparthotels.

Running for a whole seven weeks until Saturday 6 January 2024, the Edinburgh Christmas Markets take place in several locations around the historical city.

·       East Princes Street Gardens (14 mins walk from Roomzzz)

·       West Princes Street Gardens (14 mins walk from Roomzzz)

·       George Street (5 mins walk from Roomzzz)

·       St Andrew Square (4 mins walk from Roomzzz)

East Princes Street Gardens hosts a picturesque traditional Christmas market, with over 70 stalls but with the addition of a Big Wheel, Helter Skelter and Techno Power! Venture West for festive fun for all the family and live events at Ross Bandstand including choirs, silent discos and the Edinburgh Diwali: Festival of Light. Head North to George Street for the undercover ice rink (especially if it’s raining!) and finally take a stroll to St Andrew Square to meet the big man himself and try and convince him that you have been good in 2023! Social Bite’s will also be hosting a Festival of Kindness and Tree and Gift Donation point to help the vulnerable. Roomzzz Edinburgh is also supporting the cause by hosting a donation point within our reception area.

Newcastle (10 mins walk from Roomzzz)

Newcastle hosts one of the smaller Christmas markets on the list but it is quality, not quantity as they say! Taking place around Grey’s Monument on Grainger Street there will be an array of festive features including:

·       Locally-focussed market stalls selling festive food, drinks and gifts

·       Live entertainment i.e., live music and choirs

·       Moosenwurt: an alpine-inspired pop-up bar

·       A 10m tall Christmas tree

Leeds (13 mins walk from Roomzzz)

Leeds Christmas Market is back with a bang this year for the first time in four years. As usual, the main focus will be the German Market in Millennium Square. However, festivities, for the first time, will be spread all across the city centre with approximately 120 seasonal stalls and decorations, including three bar areas and a skating rink, being distributed across 13 different locations from Boar Lane to Quebec Street.

Outside of London, Manchester probably has the most festive goings-on across its fair city. The image of Exchange Square above was taken from the window of one of our Roomzzzz at Manchester Victoria within the Corn Exchange. This market very much focusses on food and includes the popular Porky Pig Yorkshire Pudding Wrap!

Other festive markets across the city centre include:

Chester (8 mins walk from Roomzzz)

Situated outside of Town Hall Square and near the famous cathedral, Chester Market consists of over 70 stalls selling everything from crafts and the wears of local distilleries to stocking fillers and confectionary. A bar is available for a different type of Christmas spirt and food is readily available for hog roasts to hot dogs.

York (14 mins walk from Roomzzz)

Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square promises a free market with more than 75 alpine chalets displaying the best products produced by talented local traders. Paid events close to the market include a two-hour Those Ghosts of Christmas Past tour which starts at 7pm on a Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and for younger attendees, or those who are young at heart, there is a chance to go and see how some naughty town mice have taken over Fairfax House this winter season.

Nottingham (8 mins walk from Roomzzz)

Nottingham’s Winter Wonderland is another traditional German affair. Hailed as one of the best markets in Europe, there are stalls from all over the globe offering a diverse range of quality festive products, foods and beverages.

There are plenty of activities for the whole family including seeing the best view in Nottingham via the observation wheel, a toboggan slide and although it isn’t the only Christmas market with an ice rink, it is the only one we have seen with a sky skate ice path!

There is also a choice of unique drinking establishments including the roof-top Altitude bar with panoramic views, the helter skelter bar (guess where this is at the top of!) and a ski-chalet style bar. There is also the Alpine ice bar which is decorated with a range of ice sculptures and provides the unique experience of sitting at an ice table and drink out of your own ice glass.
