Roomzzz General blog

Brunch is our favourite food trend of the moment. If you’re planning a stay at Roomzzz Nottingham City (and want to jump on the bandwagon), here are our favourite places for a brunch date with your beau.

Have you even been on a city break if you haven’t eaten brunch out? It’s our favourite food trend of the moment and it’s taking the world by storm – an astounding 73.4 million posts on Instagram are currently hashtagged #breakfast.

If you’re planning a stay at Roomzzz Nottingham City (and want to jump on the bandwagon), here are our favourite places for a brunch date:

Hungry Pumpkin

In the trendy Lace Market area, the Hungry Pumpkin is the place to go for all day brunch with a mouth-watering Mediterranean twist. It’s always busy in this small, independent coffee shop/deli and the incredible foodie smell as you step inside will give you a clue why. All of the food is freshly prepared every day, something that the owners (who are from Italy) are particularly proud of.

Tuck yourselves away in a cosy corner to find out what all the fuss is about. The Hungry Pumpkin serve up hearty breakfasts with all the sausage, bacon and eggs your heart could ever desire. And there are (slightly!) lighter options like chunky toast, porridge, and breakfast rolls and wraps. Veggie options are available and there are daily specials too. We recommend trying the Pumpkin Special, the chorizo sausages are the star of the show, and the cooked peppers give a welcome Continental edge.

Share a sweet peanut butter shake or sip delicious Italian coffees and soak up the homely atmosphere. And if you’d like to take a piece of the Hungry Pumpkin away with you, there are wicker baskets in the window where you can pick up Italian biscuits, pasta and olive oil.

Aubrey’s Traditional Crêperie

Aubrey’s is a must for couples who like all things quirky. This place is small but perfectly formed! Tuck into authentic French sweet and savoury crepes, and enjoy vintage vibes. You won’t be able to resist taking a few snaps for your Insta-feed – the crepes look like works of art and the interior is charmingly time-worn. The walls are decorated with antique coat racks (you know those cute ones with mirrors?), picture frames and brick-a-brac. You can sit inside at aged wooden chairs and tables or outside, where you’ll find checked blankets to snuggle up in.

The chef trained in Brittany and you can totally tell. Choose from savoury Galettes, made with buckwheat flour and topped with unexpected combinations of meats, cheeses and seasonal vegetables. Or satisfy your sweet tooth with a crepe smothered in salted caramel, dark chocolate sauce or caramelised apple with cinnamon. The Amuse selections are ideal for sharing and a great option if you can’t decide which flavour to try (because it’s seriously hard to choose!) because you get a variety of toppings on bite-sized crepes.

Fear not, the staff are more than happy to cater for veggies, vegans and those with allergies. And we’re giving brownie points for the playlist too – we’re pretty certain we heard some Ethio-Jazz. Find this hidden gem in the West End Arcade.

Brunch is served: all day, Wed – Sun

Homemade Cafe

Brunch timings vary at Homemade Cafe, depending on demand, so head along early to be sure you won’t miss out (we promise it’s worth it). Homemade is all about, you guessed it, tip-top homemade food, created with locally sourced ingredients. We can assure you the result is marvellous and the prices are unexpectedly cheap.

The no-nonsense menu will give you a laugh with items like ‘The Trendy Breakfast’, which obviously involves smashed avocado, and options for ‘a bit on the side’. While you’re ordering, feast your eyes on the cakes and bakes sat on the counter…we all know you’ll be back for one later. Insider tip: the American pancake stack will not disappoint! The pancakes are perfectly squishy, fluffy and light, and come with fresh berries and pure maple syrup.

Bag a spot in front of the big windows for views over the Recreation Ground. You might want to head back out there for a romantic stroll around in a bit…or to walk off that brunch! One of the things we like most about Homemade Cafe is the easiness of the place. The atmosphere is laid back and there are crates on the walls holding books, inviting you to stay cosied up all afternoon.

Brunch is served: 9am – various times depending on demand

Annie’s Burger Shack

Breakfast in a burger shack? Why not! At first it feels kind of odd but there’s a reason that Annie’s is a local favourite. Annie’s serves up the best American brunch in Nottingham. The breakfast menu is presented on a map and themed by region so you can tuck into homemade biscuits and gravy from the South or a Lumberjack brunch inspired by the Pacific Northwest. Get ready to fill your boots because the portions are big! All options can be made vegan, veggie or meaty.

The decor is unmistakably all American too. The walls are boarded in wood and adorned with American football memorabilia, and the tables are covered with red and white gingham cloths. We appreciate the dried hops around the windows too. Nevermind that it’s early – it’s lively and bustling at Annie’s as she wanders amongst the tables, beaming from ear to ear and offering coffee top ups from a cafetiere.

Brunch with Annie is fun and a world away from the usual coffee shop breakfast. If you’re the kind of couple who like to lay in then Annie’s probably isn’t the place for you – breakfast is only served until 10.30am and then, naturally, it’s burger time.

Brunch is served: until 10.30am

Copper

You can’t miss the Greek Revival-style exterior of Copper, on the corner of Market Street. Inside you’ll find plenty of places to huddle up together – the space is big but set on a few different levels. This slick cafe/bar has a pub turned trendy, with a hint of industrial, kind of vibe – think reclaimed wood, leather and wool seating, and quirky light fittings.

Bottomless brunch is served on Sundays – ideal for a daytime date – with prosecco, Pimms or bloody marys. It’s £18 each for 90 minutes. From Mondays to Saturdays dig into a full English, brunch burgers, omelettes, waffles, bubble and squeak – pretty much anything you fancy! The coconut chia pudding comes highly recommended, it’s light and fresh but the chia seeds give it a hearty porridge-like texture. Good news, its vegan and gluten free.

Copper is really chilled out so you’ll be able to stay a while and plan the rest of your city break. Order brunch at the bar or sit back and enjoy table service. And not to worry if you’ve got specific dietary needs – the staff will be more than happy to sort you out.

Brunch is served: until 4pm

The Pudding Pantry

Somewhat of a local-legend, The Pudding Pantry is the best brunch spot for couples who crave sweet treats. It’s every bit shabby chic inside with pastel hues, fairy lights and cakes in glass stands on the counter. There’s even a cute ice-cream cart!

You can create your own custom pancake stack and choose from toppings like blueberry compote, whipped cream, salted caramel, and vanilla ice-cream. And there are even more sweet options like croissants, and fruit and green tea loaf too. Or you could just eat cake…how about Oreo cheesecake flavour?

The Pantry’s milkshakes are insanely good – we beg you not to leave without trying one! It’s going to be hard to choose though with options like Baileys and vanilla, Eton messy and salted caramel brownie. Upgrade to a super-sized Freakshake for extra slurps. And if you’re so inclined, you can brunch until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
