This Roman founded, walled city in the north east corner of England has really been making waves in the UK restaurant scene thanks to notable TV series and a budding dining culture. According to research, Chester plays host to one restaurant for every 2,595 residents, which puts it in the top 10 most ‘restauranty’ cities in the north. No mean feat in such a historical and picturesque town that competes with Manchester and Liverpool to name but a few developing cities.

So where do you begin?

Simon Radley at the Chester Grosvenor

If you’re looking to truly indulge yourself, here is the place to be. This Michelin starred restaurant offers customers fine dining through both a la carte and taster menus that show off its credentials.

As well as a 1000+ strong bin cellar to tickle every fancy. Impressively, this eponymous restaurant has held its star since 1990 under the tutelage of Simon Radley and his team of culinary wizards. The menu evolves with each passing season so there is always something new to try while remaining steadfast in its mission to offer guests a contemporary dining experience in the most chic and opulent feeling setting.

The Botanist

One of the cool new breed of chains emerging in the UK, The Botanist is the height of hip and exciting. Highly recommended is to book yourself in for an Ale tasting or cocktail masterclass if you’re visiting with friends. Don’t feel like a full meal? Try their Deli Dining menu, packed with homemade delights and snacking classics.

Came prepared? Try something from the griddle, pie, BBQ or hanging kebab menus. Don’t resist the starters such as hummus boards and baked sardines in a tin. And, definitely make sure that you leave room for dessert; rocky road kebab, beer and cheese board or an elderflower jelly and red berry Pavlova. You cannot get it wrong here!

Siam Thai and Teppanyaki

This independent, family run restaurant has been open since 2006 and receives praise from diners from all over the UK. Situated in a fantastic setting, overlooking the Shropshire Union Canal it offers authentic dishes across three floors.

Fantastic service makes this a cool, fun place to dine with friends, family or as a couple and the food never disappoints. Choose from hearty traditional Thai dishes such as Crying Tiger BBQ beef, their light and trendy sushi menu or Teppan seafood for a buzzing, flavoursome experience that you’ll remember.

Sticky Walnut

Boasting review on Tripadvisor such as “this place is amazing” and “fab from start to finish” why wouldn’t you make a b-line for Sticky Walnut? This neighbourhood eatery has been awarded AA Restaurant of the year, this is casual dining at its finest.

With a 3-course menu at £22 this indulgent, home style eatery offers fantastic value for money set against a background of exposed kitchen (chefy entertainment) and a bank of inspiring cookbooks. Truly satisfying for any appetite.

Hickory’s Smokehouse

One of three sites in a growing regional chain, Hickory’s Smokehouse offers authentic UK BBQ food that we cannot get enough of! Choose from sticky rib racks or brisket, carved in front of you or a Texas dip sandwich packed with beef, smokey goodness, accompanied by crisp skin-on chips.

They really pride themselves on getting their core perfected so the menu is limited ensuring that every mouthful is perfection in US delicacy. Even the name sounds cool.

Kash Tap Rooms

Boasting a magnificent beer and ale selection, this eatery speaks to the buzzing artisan trend of the moment. Sit amongst wacky murals in the old Railway Cocoa Rooms, while enjoying the hop-filled air and sampling their steak burgers, hot wings or burritos.

If you’re trying to be ‘good’ you will fail here without doubt, their food is served looking like catalogue worthy artistry and tastes just as good. Sweet, juicy meats and perfectly matched craft beers from local brewers will lull even the most stiff upper lipped into an indulgent hipster trance.
